About our calculators

How our calculators work

Each calculator uses the standard formulas lenders and banks use: the amortization formula for loans and mortgages, compound interest for savings, and month-by-month simulation for credit card balances. You can pick your currency (US dollar, pound sterling, euro, Australian or Canadian dollar); the maths is the same in every country.

Results are estimates for information only. Real offers can differ because of fees, insurance, taxes and the lender's own rules, so always check the final figures with your lender or a qualified adviser.

Which calculator do I need?

  • “How much will I pay each month for a car or personal loan?” Use the loan calculator: enter amount, rate and term to see the payment, the total interest and the year-by-year schedule.
  • “Can I afford this house?” The mortgage calculator adds property tax, insurance and HOA to the principal and interest, and shows what extra payments save.
  • “How much will my savings be worth?” The compound interest calculator projects a lump sum plus monthly deposits with monthly, quarterly or annual compounding.
  • “When will my credit card be paid off?” The credit card payoff calculator works it out from your payment, or tells you the payment needed to be debt-free by a date.
  • “What does this engine power mean?” The kW to hp converter turns kilowatts into horsepower (hp, bhp) and metric horsepower (PS), both ways.
